Reconnecting...

18 Jun 2007

Welcome to "Reconnecting..." for June.

Every month when I come to write this newsletter I reflect on the themes that have been showing up for me and for others lately and this month it's all about support. Giving it. Receiving it. Asking for it. So many of us are great at offering our help, support and guidance to others but fall short when it comes to asking for it for ourselves.

Why is this? Is it because we don't believe, deep down, that we deserve it? Or is it because pride gets in the way and we don't want to show ourselves to be vulnerable to others; or because we believe that's it's somehow not 'done' to ask for help, that it's a sign of weakness? And what, exactly, is so difficult about asking for support?

Well it may be that we are worried about what others will think. The truth is they probably won't think whatever it is we fear they'll think anyway, and even if they do, that is their perception, and their issue. Or we may be trying to live by that old chestnut "I have to be perfect" (and, of course, you are anyway...!).

Another reason sometimes given for not asking for help is the fear of not being able to reciprocate. How can I repay this person for what they've done for me? Well, as my wise mum told me many years ago, we can't always 'repay' the person who gives the most to us. But we will help others in our turn, and they in their turn, and so it goes. And the universe has a perfect system of checks and balances in place anyway....

Whatever the reason, when we shut ourselves off from others and decide that we must go it alone, we are cutting off the energy flow. When we reach a place of realising that we need something - support, guidance, comfort, whatever - and then we ask for it, we open up and invite possibilities into our lives. When we ask, and - just as importantly - open ourselves to receive, we pave the way for an exploration of our own vulnerability and our underlying issues. We also deepen our connection to others and to all that is. Opening to another and asking for support means that we get to share more of ourselves, and we also get to find out about another. We also get to have that wonderful experience of the sum being greater than the parts. No exchange is ever just one-way, every interaction is mutual at some level. Sometimes when you ask a person for help you will find they have been waiting for just what you have to offer them too.

So tune in to your inner guidance and find out where you are holding back out of fear or shame or some other form of resistance. And begin to ask. Ask a friend, a colleague, a family member, a therapist, your angels...it doesn't matter. When we start asking we let go on some level. And by letting go we begin to move forward and make changes. When we come together and offer mutual support and assistance we all grow and learn and heal in the process. We're not in this alone. Community and connection are the way forward into deeper and more authentic living.

With love and blessings.

This is a series of books transcribed from audio and visual recordings of this wise sage, from his international talks given over a thirty-five year period.

Titles include: Awareness, Courage, Creativity, Intimacy, Joy and Freedom.

Although I am sure many of you will have already come across this well-known and provocative spiritual teacher, it is always good to be reminded of things that can help in our day to day ‘how can I change my world for the better?’ quest. All of this series are gems, but the one I am enjoying the most is Creativity - Unleashing the Forces Within. You can either read the book from front to back or dip into whichever page opens. Pertinent truths are highlighted in boxes to provide insight at a quick glance, or entice you in to reading more of the text. Whichever way you chose to use these books there are pearls of wisdom to reclaim. As so much of this way of thinking is already a part of us, he reminds us who we really are...

'Creativity means bringing the new into existence, making a way for the unknown to penetrate the known, making a way for the sky to come to the earth. When there is a Beethoven or a Michelangelo or a Kalidas, the skies open, flowers shower from the beyond’. OSHO

All titles in the series are available from Amazon where the ‘read inside’ facility on most of them gives a good indication for each book.

The Coral Angel is a stunningly beautiful essence of great lightness and joy and is of huge assistance to anyone feeling put upon or bullied. The essence brings in deep levels of self-acceptance and self-love so that we actually stop aligning ourselves with the bullying or abuse. We can then stand in our power and say 'enough'.

Coral Angel is also just a wonderful tonic at any time when we need to reconnect with the magic and wonderment of life and our ability to manifest and create.

This and all other Colourworks bottles are available for £20 + p&p. Contact me to purchase or to find out more.

In this one-day workshop we will tune into the powerful early summer energies to focus on positive and practical ways to enhance your well-being. The early summer is a time for opening, expanding, creating and celebrating, and we will explore the vibrant qualities of this time of year through colour, movement, meditation, visualisation and healing energies.

Chi Kung links the seasons to corresponding body organs, elements and colours. The summer has a particular focus on the element of Fire and the colours red, orange and yellow, so we will be particularly working with these energies.

Wednesday Evenings, 7-9pm, at The Deaf Centre, Love Lane, Salisbury, SP1 2BG 5 weeks from 20 June @ £10 per session or £45 if paid in advance.

Chi Kung or Qigong is an ancient Chinese form of movement exercise which helps to restore the body’s natural harmony through a range of exercises and meditations. It is at the root of Tai Chi and other martial arts as its aim is to build the body’s central resourcing system, cultivating ‘Chi’ (natural energy), which can then be used for whatever we choose. It is useful to relieve stress, encourage a calm body and a clear mind. Great for creative people and for health care professionals who spend more time looking after others than themselves.

The flowing movements are easy to follow and have several layers of awareness to consider, ranging from the mechanics of the movement to the energetics. The session begins with exercises to prepare for Chi Kung, followed by a themed selection of Chi Kung forms and completes with a 20 minute Taoist meditation.

It would be helpful to have done yoga, meditation or Tai Chi.

Classes are held in a variety of other locations, please see website for more details.

One of the key animal welfare organisations in this country and indeed the world, is CIWF (Compassion in World Farming). Some of their many achievements include: ban on veal crates across the EU, ban on sow stalls in the EU (to be implemented from 2013), ban on battery cages in the EU (from 2012), animals being legally recognised as sentient beings.....

Visit www.ciwf.org.uk to find out more about their work and how you can support them and the animals.

Turns out E-Bay are directly and indirectly assisting the illegal wildlife trade including sales of ivory. Despite a pledge of commitment to a global policy on ivory trade, pressure is needed to ensure the trade is not supported by this and other on-line auction sites. Visit www.ifaw.org to send an online letter to E-Bay corporate headquarters urging a global ban on ivory sales.

A boat docked in a tiny Mexican village. An American tourist complimented the Mexican fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took him to catch them. "Not very long," answered the Mexican.
"But then, why didn't you stay out longer and catch more?" asked the American. The Mexican explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his needs and those of his family.

The American asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?"
"I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings, I go into the village to see my friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs...I have a full life."

The American interrupted, "I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat. With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or even New York City!   From there you can direct your huge enterprise."

"How long would that take?" asked the Mexican.
"Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years," replied the American.
"And after that?"
"Afterwards? That's when it gets really interesting," answered the American, laughing. "When your business gets really big, you can start selling stocks and make millions!"
"Millions? Really? And after that?"
"After that you'll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta, and spend your evenings drinking and enjoying your friends."
