Reconnecting...

Welcome to "Reconnecting..." for February.

A word that keeps coming up for me at the moment is integrity. I realise It's something I value a great deal in myself and others. But what does it actually mean? We'll all have our own interpretations, but for me it's about being in alignment with who I really am. It's about speaking, thinking and acting in ways that come from the inner core of myself, the greater 'me' that is aligned with compassion, love and honesty. It's about coming from a place of love rather than judgement. There are times, however, when I don't act from this place and what I've been noticing lately is that it just feels so uncomfortable when I'm out of integrity with myself. I'll say something and hear it coming out my mouth and the worm of discomfort slides up from my belly and reminds me that what I'm saying is somehow not in alignment with my truth about myself or my beliefs or the way I endeavour to live my life. You know the feeling? You don't actually like or even necessarily believe what you're saying but still the words are out before you've be able to catch them. Perhaps you strive to practice harmlessness in your life yet find yourself saying something cutting or unpleasant about someone. Perhaps you advise others to 'let go' of something that is holding them back, yet find yourself holding on tight to your own bonds. You may say 'yes' to someone or something when your inner voice is shouting 'no'!

What happens when we're out of integrity is that we can get caught up in anger, frustration, judgement and blame. And it's then we need to ask ourselves a few questions. How much energy do we have to expend in order to maintain our need to be 'right' or to have the last word? Where do we hold fast to a 'principle' because we're so stuck on our own version of the truth? Where do we 'big' ourselves up or put others down to make ourselves feel better? When do we justify ourselves and our actions rather than being authentic? When do we use the past to justify or blame for our current existence rather than being with what is, in the moment?

There is a gift here if we look for it. Such situations allow us the opportunity to stop and notice....and then, if we choose to, we can do something different, respond in a different way, re-align ourselves with our own highest truth. As with intuition and accessing our inner wisdom, practising integrity is like working a muscle - the more we use it the stronger it gets.

I'm playing with all this at the moment, noticing when I step out of integrity, letting go of the judgement I may feel toward myself around that, and then actively seeking other ways to think, speak or act that might keep me aligned with my integrity. It's not always easy! But worth the effort.

For those of you have been browsing the YOFA website I keep mentioning, you will have come across this book by Rebbie Straubing. If you haven't read it yet, I can assure you it is well worth getting if you have any interest in seeing yourself in a different way, opening up to new possibilities, deepening your meditation practice and connecting with your body. It is the sort of book I read a few pages of each day, with concentrated focus, and the energy I receive and the insights are wondrous. You can download the first few pages from the website and see if you think it will be for you. How will you know? By the 'yes!' feeling in your heart.

This month I'm leaving it up to you to do a spot of your own research...I came across an American website about Random Acts of Kindness and it spurred me on Google this term and see what else was out there...well it turns out, lots! Not all of them will appeal to all of you but I challenge you to find one you like and join up - and start giving, randomly, to complete strangers. Why would you do this? Well the benefits of acts of kindness have been well-documented - having fun, increasing self-esteem, meeting new people, feeling good about yourself, knowing you've helped someone...There's a lovely kooky one from the UK called Join Me which started as something of a joke and has now reached cult status (in the nicest possible sense of the word!). Go and Google and start giving today...
